En 1967, Deval tourne en Tunisie un « péplum philosophique » : Héraclite l’obscur (1967) en 35 mm, couleur. Il y aborde l’Antiquité du point du vue du tiers-monde : l’Antiquité est à la mode – c’est l’époque où Pier-Paolo Pasolini réalise Œdipe roi (Edipo re, 1967). Charles Denner a donné sa voix à l’acteur qui joue Héraclite. Deval présente ce film au Festival d’Hyères en avril 1968.
