16mm earrings— un film de Robert Withers /

Meredith Monk est compositeur, chorégraphe, metteur en scène et actrice. Elle a créé plus de 40 musiques-danse-pièces de théâtre depuis 1964. La performance de 16 MILLIMETER EARRINGS a été créée en 1966. Pour les besoins du film, elle a été exécutée en 1980 à nouveau. Le film reprend la plupart des bandes- sonores et séquences filmées projetées pendant l’action. Le thème de 16 Millimeter Earrings est la transformation des fonctions humaines en fonctions mécaniques. Les voix humaines se transforment en bruits mécaniques, les réactions émotionnelles sont réduites à l’état de masques.

What we have of 16mm Earrings is a document made by Robert Withers. We shot it in 1977; that’s already ten years after the piece was made, which was 1966. In the original performance I had an accumulation of sound loops, which made the environment completely haunting. To me, the film seems more fragmented. I was working to make an ironic relationship between the text and what was happening. The thing I like about the document of 16mm Earrings is that at least – I mean, looking at it now it’s a pretty moving rite of passage of a young woman coming into her sexuality. But the original performance had more power and sophistication. (Meredith Monk)
