- COMMODITY TRADING : ELECTION DAY by M. Woods par Michael Woods

My daughter, Virgil, guides my family through a personal and political hell in the Jungles of Los Angeles. This is a video from the perspective of a minority with white privilege. This is a video about white supremacy; this is a video fashioned as a weapon towards the malignant narcissist racist masquerading as head of state, and within we see the symbolic exchange and decay of post-spectacle media suspension, like a molasses flood that slowly suffocates the soul and crusts over as a dream. (An experimental documentary/narrative fashioned into an attack on the disturbing omnipotence of hyperrealism and fascist banality - best symbolized by Donald Trump's burning plastic effigy. Commodity Trading is a series of films incorporating all media available from super 8, 16mm, 35mm, cellphone, and high-resolution digital, into a violent collage of the simulacral tumult of media waste and the fury/anger of racism in the wake of the rise of Alt-Right neo-fascism.)

- Gradiva Esquisse I par Raymonde Carasco

Based on the theme of the novel “Gradiva” by W. Jensen, Raymonde Carasco manages to transform some realist images to an abstract ballet : the Gradiva’s step don’t stop to put itself in slow motion on a bas-relief.

"A violent wind generates the images. The atmosphere is air tight (and stale?). Silent bodies in front of the mirror. The ritual of small repetitive gestures opens the scene at the hairdressers. In an unpredictable and fragile present, the traces of a past world hussle themselves within carved faces.
The storm quiets itself. A slow lethargy takes over everyday life: some people are eating, singing, playing ,some are walking in the sculpted out spaces. These lives are silenced by slowly sinking into the ordinary world, bodies swinging themselves at the gates of deep sleep.

Then, one day, humanity wakes up and crosses over to the exterior side. Armed with wise gestures and precious postures, they watch with a smile an uneasy world falling apart. The event has already taken place. The last men are standing straight as trees, eternal survivors witnessing the disaster of the absent world within the world.

From this consistant and unchangeable absence, these last men save the images."

Medellin. Tireless car traffic. In the margins of a society launched at top speed, some lurking engines shutdown to make a living ; Jugglers at intersections, employees on breaks, whose precise and repetitive work mark the flow of time which is always repeated.

- A FILM (extract) par Franziska Kabisch

What does a house look like? How would you depict a city? Or a country? What´s the image of France?
And what am I? A human being? A woman? A sister? A student? An artist? A suspect? 'A Film' is a film about names, terms and the problems coming with them. It shows a juxtaposition of images from mass media, private albums and depictions of historical events. The content of each image is being named, determined. However, these names, significations become problematic. Some images need various names. Some terms can be illustrated differently. These ambivalences make clear how politically relevant, even dangerous the act of 'calling sb/sth a name' can be.

- Between Images III (Laura and the Black Crystal Suns) par Helene Garberg

Between Images III (Laura and the Black Crystal Suns) is a culmination to earlier explorations of the image as object versus imaginary space. In this case, the virtual image has been my outset. The video uses fiction as a way to re-frame- or make the visual material exceed itself, while it poses a quite literal scenario: the subject of the text has fallen into a gap in the material world and is now caught between images. Cited in part / partly reinvented is George Sand’s early romantic fiction ‘Laura - a Journey into the Crystal’. Important to me, in my use of text in the video, is the sense of an inner dialogue or stream of consciousness that may take on ‘voice’ again in the viewer/reader’s mind. I have aimed to create an experience of images as both states of flow and transition – and worlds that momentarily materialise.
Between Images III, consists of video recordings and photos from a complex of caves – inverted to the visual negative; a bright white environment where sources of light become concentrations of black. A narrative is played out in subtitles. This combines elements from George Sand’s early romantic fiction “Laura – a Journey into the Crystal” with my own writing. A first-person narrator tells a looping story of falling into ‘a gap in the material world’ while daydreaming, and now being lost between images. The ‘voice’ of Laura, that occurs half-way into the video, becomes exchangeable for the first-person narrator, when the video loops. The video is soundless.

The work is the third part of an ongoing series in which I have aimed to explore the phenomena of the image - in this case, the virtual image. The video is as much an attempt at representing a state of mind, a subjective time or flow of duration. Through the use of fiction, I have taken the idea of accessing the interior world of images quite literally. ‘Between’ now refers to the leap between different image-worlds. Likewise, the editing attempts to follow a literal logic; namely that each image/scene is of limited spatial depth. When a character walks into the image/scenery, she eventually dissolves/disappears and there is a cut to the next image/scene.

[#1 HAPPINESS AVENUE ]
